Chicago & Turabian Styles

Chicago Manual of Style (CMS)

CMS is used most often for history papers. It provides writers and students with a system for referencing their sources through notes and bibliography pages. The current edition of the CMS is the 16th edition published in 2010. The print volume is located on the first floor of the Library on the Reference Shelf next to the computers.

CMS currently has guidelines for two citation formats; 1) author-date and 2) notes-bibliography systems of citation.

Remember that most Library Databases will format your citations for you! Look for a tool or icon that says 'Cite'. The Formatting Citations page shows you where to find this tool on library search platforms.

Turabian Style

Turabian is basically a condensed version of the Chicago stylebook, created by Kate Turabian. Her guide is based on the Chicago Style, but is easier for students to use, omitting many details for publishing. Turabian is primarily used in religious studies/theology courses.
