The University’s general education curriculum flows directly from the institution’s Mission statement where it says “Students will acquire depth of knowledge and expertise in their chosen field of study, balanced by breadth of knowledge across various disciplines. Special emphasis is placed on enhancing oral and written communication, and critical thinking skills.” It is the general education curriculum that primarily assists students in the acquisition of the desired breadth of knowledge across various disciplines. In addition, the general education curriculum reflects the University’s belief that the best preparation for life (especially a student’s professional life) is the acquisition of a breadth of knowledge that is complementary to depth of knowledge in a discipline, because it is this balance of breadth and depth which will help students to meet the challenges and profit from the opportunities that they will confront in a rapidly changing professional world where intellectual and professional flexibility, and communication and critical thinking skills, are often among the prerequisites for long-term success.
