Introducing the Learning Commons

A recent trend in academic libraries is moving towards a 'learning commons' service model which blends library services & resources with adjacent campus services, such as academic support & tutoring, information technology, and writing services, among other departments.

"The learning commons model functionally and spatially integrates library, information technology and other academic support services to provide a continuum of services to the user, a blending of staff knowledge and skills, and referral to appropriate areas of expertise" (McMullen, 2008).

At the DeTamble Library, we are launching the Learning Commons in Fall 2023 to pool academic support professionals together. The Learning Commons will offer students a 'one-stop shop' for academic support, disability accommodations, writing assistance, and library services and resources. While the library building will remain 'DeTamble Library', the library will house the Office of Disability Services (ODS), the Center for Academic Success (CAS), the Restoration & Wellness Center (RWC), and a newly formed Writing Center. Student assistants will be cross-trained to tutor and deliver library services while the academic support and library staff will collaborate to create opportunities that promote student success.
