J. Kennedy Tod was a frequent benefactor to Flora MacDonald College. He gave the college a collection of 37 paintings in 1921, as well as a number of items connected with Flora MacDonald herself (brooch, locket, miniatures, etc.). His widow willed the college the copy of Allan Ramsey's portrait of Flora done for the Tod home, Innis Arden on Long Island Sound by a London artist.
A Glasgow, Scotland native, Mr. Tod was a professional rugby player for Scotland in national matches. He later moved to New York City and founded J. Kennedy Tod & Co, a banking firm and realigned several large railroad companies in the late 19th century. He was president of St. Andrews Society of New York, an organization that preserves Scottish history and heritage.
